Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale (1947–1984) was a prominent Sikh preacher and leader known for advocating a return to the core Sikh values, discipline, and identity. As the head of the Damdami Taksal, he emphasized spiritual living and the protection of Sikh rights. He became a central figure during a time of rising tensions between Sikhs and the Indian government. Bhindranwale was killed during Operation Blue Star in 1984, when the Indian Army entered the Golden Temple. To many Sikhs, he is remembered as a martyr who stood for justice and Sikh sovereignty.
